LAWRENCEVILLE. Founded 1787. Named for Commodore James Lawrence of the United States Navy. Commodore Lawrence, also known as Captain Lawrence, died as a result of mortal wounds from a battle during the War of 1812. The Borough of Lawrenceville in northern Tioga County has a peaceful existence in comparison. Lawrenceville is a small town just south of the border with New York State and is home to picturesque Cowanesque Lake.
