  LAWRENCEVILLE. Founded 1787. Named for Commodore James Lawrence of the United States Navy. Commodore Lawrence, also known as Captain Lawrence, died as a result of mortal wounds from a battle during the War of 1812. The Borough of Lawrenceville in northern Tioga County has a peaceful existence in comparison. LEXINGTON - Founded 1805. Formerly Dundee, renamed for Battle of Lexington. Located in Lancaster County, north of Lititz. How to Get There:

LAIRDSVILLE - Founded 1829. Named for John Laird, pioneer settler. Located on the pleasant Little Muncy Creek on an alluvial flat, Lairdsville is the only village in Franklin Township and has the only post office located in the township. John Laird was the first postmaster of the post office in Lairdsville. Lavansville is a village just west of Somerset.  It is named after the community's founder, David Lavan.  Lavan settled here around 1812 and owned most of the land on the eastern side of the village.

LE RAYSVILLE - Founded 1798.  Bradford County town named after Le Ray de Chaumont, which is the castle of Jacques-Donatien Le Ray, who was a French supporter of the American Revolution.  Le Raysville is home to LeRaysville Cheese - an Amish cheese factory opened in 1978. Photo taken by Doug Kerr.

Among the picturesque countryside of Lancaster County is a historic iron forge called Poole Forge. Founded around the time of the American Revolution by a Welshman named James Old, Poole Forge produced armaments and other iron goods by various owners for a burgeoning nation from 1775 to 1852. These days, Poole Forge is a park, has a covered bridge that was constructed over the Conestoga Creek in 1859, hosts weddings from some of the remaining original buildings and a chance to learn about early industry in this part of Pennsylvania. LIVERPOOL - Founded 1818.  Named for Liverpool, England.  The Staily family which settled here - named the town after where they emigrated from Liverpool, England.  Located along the Susquehanna River, Liverpool was once an important town along the Pennsylvania Canal.

LICKDALE - Founded 1782.  Originally called Union Forge, the village changed its name to Lickdale in 1884 in honor of James Lick, the famed piano maker who was born in nearby Fredericksburg.

LEECHBURG - Founded 1832.  Named after David Leech - early settler and hunter. Leech secured the contract for construction of a lock and dam along the then Pennsylvania Canal.  He also financed the construction of a railway between Pittsburgh and Kittanning that was completed in 1856.  David Leech would pass away two years later.
