Fairfield

FAIRFIELD - Founded 1801. Named for Fairfield, England. A gentleman by the name of Squire Miller had the land around Fairfield surveyed and plotted with the plan of naming the town Millerstown, but since there was already a town on the Juniata River called Millerstown, the name of Fairfield was chosen instead. The area surrounding Fairfield played a role in the Gettysburg Campaign of the Civil War, as the roads in the area were vital to moving around troops. There was also a battle between Union and Confederate troops called "The Fairfield Action" that took place near Fairfield on July 3, 1863.
