Pine Hill Vista

Within the friendly confines of Pinchot State Forest in southern Lackawanna County, there are quite a few scenic areas. One of these scenic areas is the Pine Hill Vista, at the top of the Big Pine Hill at 2260 feet above sea level. As I have become more interested in seeing the various scenic vistas of the Keystone State, a recent trip to the Poconos pointed me in the direction of the Pine Hill Vista. After all, I enjoy visiting fire towers and other scenic overlooks no matter where my travels take me. Traveling along some bumpy dirt roads through the Pinchot State Forest near Thornhurst, I reached a closed gate on Pine Hill Road and walked the rest of the way up to the vista, which was about a quarter of a mile long. You also have the option visiting the Pine Hill Vista as part of a longer hike, utilizing part of the Pinchot Trail system in the process, or by following a hiking loop on a number of trails. Once you reach the summit of Big Pine Hill, you are at one of the highest...

Hughes Covered Bridge

One of the longer covered bridges in Washington County, the Hughes Covered Bridge has a long and storied history.  Built in 1889, the bridge became the center of a legal battle nearly 90 years later over its location.   The Hughes Bridge is a 55-and-one-half-foot Queen post bridge over Ten Mile Creek.  In 1915, Washington County took over maintenance of the bridge from Amwell Township.  56 years later, Washington County looked to move the Hughes Bridge to Mingo Creek Park.  Early in 1971, the county began deconstructing the bridge so it could be transported to the park.  Amwell Township filed suit to prevent the move to the Washington County Park.  A judge would rule in favor of the township and ordered the county to restore the bridge to its previous state. Since that court ruling, Hughes Covered Bridge has remained at its home off of Montgomery Run Road.  Additionally, since 1971, the bridge has been a stop on the annual two-county, Wa...

Sinclair Gas Station - Warren Center

Sometimes, cruising along the back roads, you'll find something neat that you didn't expect to see. During one of my trips around northern Pennsylvania, I found a piece of Americana on one of these back roads. Located in Bradford County in the small community of Warren Center , there is a replica of an older Sinclair Gas station that has been restored to vintage condition. The signage, building and the gas pumps all look pristine. This link to a bygone era is worth celebrating as well, as there is an annual cruise-in every September where you can have your classic car photographed in front of the gas station. Vintage gas pumps serving ethyl and gasoline. A look inside of the gas station. True back then as it is now. I would love for gas to go down to those prices again! The Sinclair dinosaur logo was a secondary logo back then. Sinclair gas sign. Sources and Links: Welcome to Warren Township - Warren Township Annual Cruise In Waymarking ...
